Maybe because of the cap getting bigger, but I'm not sure. When you're that old(relatively), a year can make a big difference. I'd rather negotiate at 37 coming off a healthy and league-leading passing season than 38 with who knows what kind of season or shape. Peyton Mainning went from setting all time records and winning the MVP in his 37-year-old season to a weak-armed sort of embarrassment just 2 years later. And he's 6'5". Drew is barely 6'0". I think he's taking a pretty big gamble not extending now. I hope to God it's not true, but I'd bet he's in at least a little worse negotiating place this time next year.

He will play out his contract and unless the Saints offer him a contract next year that will make him the highest paid QB in the history of the world, he will walk and sign with whoever ponies up the most money.
