Not necessarily. I have learned close to zero mechanical theory since graduating. Despite popular opinion, that shite is useful in the real world. You wouldn't believe how many people don't understand how a bolt works.

I love my job as an engineer. I did a field walk down of a giant heat exchanger built in 1953. No idea what some of the shite on that vessel is. Got assigned some fairly impossible projects and got two pages of hand drawn diagrams and equations from the director to review. Nutty crap.
