Wow, we were at a lot of the same shows. I was chastised by the musical director at WPRG, precursor to KLSU, for playing too much ELP.

This appears to be one of those "health related" suicides. He was despondent about his reduced ability to play (he's struggled with nerve and arthritis issues in his hands for years - really, since his late 40s). Really a shame.

Saw Emerson stab his keyboard with two Bowie knifes at the Fox theater in Atlanta during the early mid 80's. Emerson, Lake & Powell concert.

Also played there in 1974. The set list was the same as the live album "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends."

RIP.

Can't do what he loves to do and doesn't know how to cope.

Great band when Lake was in charge of production. Then everyone wanted to be in charge, have their own solos, and then the band became a caricature of itself. Works was the beginning of the end, Works II was awful.

Then Lake's voice. How the hell did it get so bad so quickly? I mean Works to Emerson, Lake, and Powell is only a few years and his voice is shot to hell.

I can't remember being more disappointed in an album than Works Vol. 1. Vol. 2 was worse but by then it was expected. And then Love Beach....oh Lawd.

Love Beach was a contract album.

There were a few good tracks on works. I love pirates. Works Live is not bad but you tell Lake is starting to lose his range.

Also didn't help Emerson ditched the Moog and ElP lost its distinctive sound

He has been a smoker most of his life, that couldn't have helped.

So did Sinatra and he had his range until his late 50's.

The piano concerto on Works Vol 1 is great. And I like Pirates a lot also.

A couple more of my favorites:

Two Copland compositions. Their version of Fanfare for the Common Man is excellent. It's like looking at a book of Norman Rockwell illustrations. And Hoedown; ELP does Bluegrass.

Always into these guys since the 70's. My teenage son idolizes Emerson (he's a pianist too).
