2)Brees needs a vet set of eyes - this is why we have Mccown and insisted on getting Flynn when Mccown went down. I think the team might be comfortable if Brees died right now throwing Grayson in there, but if we're talking about Brees being the starter and needing someone to help him assess what he's seeing on the field when he comes to the sideline, I'm more comfortable with it being a vet like Mccown who has been in the league for a long arse time

This is why and there's no other reason to it.

There are reasons some of these players are career backups for decades, because they know the game.

Yes "QB Coach" has that job and so do many others, but the job of a backup QB is also to observe the game from the sideline (same as to what Brees was doing FOR McCown v Carolina). You're going to put a 2nd year guy who's essentially still learning? We've always had a vet behind Brees to do this, even when we had a guy in the wing. Also of course the primary job, just incase Brees goes down you want someone who's able to save you a few times. McCown almost did and the 1.5mil we're shelling out for him doesn't hurt us if its ultimately helping Brees avoid throwing a dumb pick he's prone to.

2006-2007: Jamie Martin
2008-2009: Mark Brunell
2010-2012: Chase Daniel (beat out Patrick Ramsey)
2013-present: Luke McCown

all multi-year vets or beat out a vet (Daniel) as Brees' backup
