I'll give you an example at my house.

I have 100 Mbps down
In my office, I have my modem and the powerline adapter.
About 40 ft as the crow flies across the room, I have my powerline adapter. I hooked up my Nighthawk to it so I can get better coverage through the house because that is centrally located. I ended up get a MAX of 24 Mbps. It had a surge protector in the same outlet ( powerline was not connected to that) and electronics on the protector. I moved it 2 outlets down and got 45Mbps down. No other electronics were on the outlet. I then put the Nighthawk in the office and now I get 115 Mbps down on wifi everywhere. I only use my powerline adapter now to put my ATT microcell near a window.
