the war was a mistake because we went about it all wrong. it could have easily been korea part 2 and who knows, maybe south vietnam would have flourished like south korea has

I would have gone. I'm retired from the military now and truthfully loved it. Even Vietnam wasn't really a just war, had I been drafted I would have had to go. Couldn't look my dad and uncles in the eyes if I had run. My family stays and fights, it what we do....

I used to mow this old lady's yard when I was about 9. She told me her first husband died in WWI, sons and other relatives in WWII and grandsons in Korea and Vietnam. She told me if they call my number do go fight on foreign soil to run. It was odd to hear because in the area I lived it wasn't common sentiment.

I'd have no problem defending this country and the land, but I'm not ever fighting for someone else.

It was basically Korea Part 2. We forced North Vietnam to sign the Treaty of Paris in 73 which ended the war in pretty much the same manner The Korean War ended. What makes Vietnam different is once this war ended we abandoned the South. The liberal democrats in congress voted to cut off all aid to South Vietnam. And while we abandoned South Vietnam, the Soviets wastes no time in pouring tons of arms, equipment, and supplies to North Vietnam. By 1975 while the ARVN was now an empty shell of the force that had crushed the NVA during the Easter Offensive of 1972, the NVA was fully ready for war. And it was in 1975 that the North struck the South and overran them while the South's pleas to the US to honor their treaty obligations and help them fell on deaf ears. Thus, South Vietnam's fate was sealed.

As for the question in the OP, you're damn right I'd have answered my country's call. I answered it in 1988 when I enlisted in the Army. I don't see any reason why I'd have not done the same in 1968.
