A Wi-Fi access point simply sends and receives the network signal without doing all of the routing work that the router does. You connect a network cable from your router, and run the cable as far as you can through the attic, then connect it to an access point. I have mine mounted to the ceiling in the garage. It allowed me to upgrade my wireless signal to AC band without buying an AC router.
