I think it's sad... but at his age he would probably already be dead in the wild, or at the very least at the end of his life expectancy. I don't know why they would spend a lot of money just to extend his life for a bit, but perhaps the care is being donated by Mary Bird Perkins and it's being used as a teaching/learning experience for the vet school.
