Leicester City (EPL) may be longest longshot ever - 5000-1 and currently leading

I don't pay attention or care about soccer outside of the WC, but I found this article on ESPN today pretty damn interesting. Hopefully it doesn't get relegated to the Soccer Board.
Apparently Leicester City is in 1st place by 5 points with 13 games left in the season. They began the season as 5,000-1 longshots at William Hill, an England-based bookmaker.
The article also has a list of 10 other incredible longshots that either won or flirted with a title, including:

ETA: Welp, apparently this thread wasn't good enough for the MSB.
JBE and finance threads all over the OT, but they police the shite out of the MSB it appears. Oh well.

Just how crazy is 5,000-1?
Here are some other bets (legal in England, not the U.S.) offered at those odds by William Hill:
• Elvis is found alive.
• Yeti or Loch Ness Monster is proven to exist.
• Christmas is the warmest day of the year in England.
• Kanye West and Kim Kardashian name their next child Sinner.
• Kim Kardashian becomes the U.S. president in 2020.
• Barack Obama plays cricket for England after he leaves Oval Office.

1,000-1
2013 Auburn Football
Odds to win BCS championship
The Cam Newton-led championship season of 2010 was nothing but a distant memory at Auburn by 2013. The Tigers went 8-5 in 2011 and 3-9 the next year, leading to Gene Chizik's firing. Auburn was unranked through the first half of the 2013 season, but new coach Gus Malzahn guided the Tigers to a 12-1 record, an SEC crown and a berth in the BCS title game. Auburn came within 13 seconds of beating those 1,000-1 odds, but Jameis Winston's championship-winning touchdown pass capped Florida State's come-from-behind victory.

999-1
2011 St. Louis Cardinals
Odds to win World Series (late in the season)
Trailing the Atlanta Braves by 4.5 games in the wild-card race on Sept. 12 with 15 games to play, the Cardinals were basically left for dead by Las Vegas oddsmakers. St. Louis was given 500-1 odds to win the NL pennant and 999-1 odds to win the World Series. But the Cardinals closed with an 11-4 run to sneak into the playoffs ahead of the Braves, who lost their final five games. The Cardinals then took down the Philadelphia Phillies in the division series and the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series. They were down to their last strike twice in Game 6 of the World Series before rallying to beat the Texas Rangers in seven games. Oh, and one happy bettor in Las Vegas turned $500 into $375,000 thanks to St. Louis' improbable run

120-1
2004 Red Sox
Odds to win World Series (after trailing 3-0 in ALCS)
Boston's 98-64 record in 2004 was the third best in baseball behind the Yankees and the Cardinals. So while the Red Sox weren't the favorites heading into the postseason, their chances weren't bad. But after they lost the first three games of the ALCS against the Yankees, their World Series odds plummeted, for good reason: No MLB team had ever erased a 3-0 deficit in a seven-game series. Not only did the Red Sox make history by coming back to win their first AL pennant since 1986, but they also swept the Cardinals to win their first World Series since 1918, finishing the postseason with eight straight wins.

Their domination of Manchester City in an away match put them 5 clear of the 2nd place club.
That kind of really shoved this into a reality.

Those are some great 5000-1 comparisons

Past 2 months the talk has been that well they are just going to fall off eventually...nope just proceeded to dickslap one of league favorites this past weekend.
They are fun as hell to watch too thankfully.

I can honestly say I've never seen an EPL match in my life, but those odds are absolutely nuts.
ETA: Not that there is anything wrong with watching/enjoying soccer, but I've got no clue about the details involved in the EPL or Leicester City and they're ability to actually win the league.

I thought so as well, particularly the Elvis one.
I think this is the same place that gave Rory McIlroy's dad some crazy odds that Rory would win a British Open before 27 when Rory was like 12.

Kind of like Donald Trump presidential campaign, I keep waiting for them to fall apart. Hasn't happened yet though.

They were the 14th best team in the league last year. It would be like the Pelicans winning the NBA title this year (or at least the regular season title).
And damn, they moved the thread.

They're some Nazis on the MSB. This thread really has little to do with Soccer, more so major longshots in sports.
You can post a "Why I hate JBE" thread on the OT and that bitch will stay there all day, but the slightest mention of soccer and you're vanquished to the Soccer Board.

Look at it like this, in the 23 previous seasons of the Premier League there have been only 5 clubs that have managed to win the title:
- Manchester United - 13 times (most recent title 2012-13 season)
- Chelsea - 4 (2014-15)
- Arsenal - 3 (2003-04)
- Manchester City - 2 (2013-14)
- Blackburn Rovers - 1 (1994-95)
Over that same period of time, a total of 47 different clubs have been in the league (with 20 teams in the league in each year). Leicester City have been in the PL in just 10 of those 23 years. In 2008-09, they were in League one, they jumped up to the Championship in 2009-10 and then moved up again into the Premier League in 2014-15. That would be like McNeese State winning the Southland Conference in 2008, moving to CUSA for a few years and winning it in 2013, moving up to the SEC and winning THAT league in only their 2nd year there.

I'd imagine they were also a major underdog.

Didn't this happen to a Liverpool player in the last few years?
Dad made a bet that he would play for Liverpool while he was basically a toddler.

Seriously? When Spurs played them 3 times in like 10 days, that was some awful soccer to watch by them.
Basically just park the bus and counter. They're just really good at it.

They were an interesting case. They spent a ton of money in the summer transfer window that year (they had somewhat new ownership) and broke the English money record for strikers twice and another record for a goalkeeper.
Leicester's best players this season played with them in the second division.

The two opposite styles don't really add up to producing enjoyable soccer imo. They have the lowest passing % in the league and y'all are the best pressing team in the league.

Welcome to how most teams are playing nowadays. Hell even Arsenal has begun to embrace it, a lot less "Wengerball" being played by them.
