I rarely, if ever, have an algae problem.
You are having them b/c you aren't maintaining a correct amount of chlorine. The Clorox dissipates too quickly (as it is designed to do). You are, in effect, shocking the pool on a too-often basis.
I don't see how you're saving money, not being a Dick, I've had a pool for a long time.

I had an algae problem because I inherited a flawed pool that wasn't sucking down the tabs and I was toob stupid and had too much to do with a new house to notice until it was too late.
The Clorox method has been a godsend.
Eta maintaining a pool isn't rocket science but it does take some time to get to know it.
