So this Friday, my sons' school will be celebrating "Friendship Day" instead of Valentine's Day. Some of the rules we have been emailed for this riveting event:

1. No heart-shaped candy
2. No heart-shaped cards
3. No cards asking "be my valentine"

Here is an excerpt from the classroom parent:

quote:

****** Elementary continues to provide the best education for our students through both scholastic and social mediums. Friendship Day offers our kids the opportunity to enjoy the companionship and camaraderie among and within their classrooms without feeling the pressure of suggested romance. We are looking forward to your child's participation this Friday, and we are excited if you can attend. Please remember to avoid bringing cards or candy which resemble a heart or which may contain expressions with romantic undertones.

My kids exchanged stuff last week, but the new rule is that you have to have a card for everyone in your home room class.

No leaving anyone out.

My 7 yr old daughter took the little Valentines mailbox she made over the weekend to class with her this morning. Valentines is still in full effect here.

I was rejected by a girl for the first time at my 4th grade Valentine's Day class party. You had to bring valentines for everyone in the class, and put them in their cubby. I chose this moment to profess to this one girl that I liked her, using said Valentine. After I had written it, I got cold feet, and decided against it. However, instead of just not giving it to her, I decided to mark out my name on the card. Not with a sharpie or anything that would actually conceal my identity, but with white out. She scratched it right off and humiliated me in front of the class.

As painful as it was, it was an important experience in my life that I would never have gotten from "friendship day."

So, I suppose I can at least SEE where the school is coming from with these moronic rules, but what would happen if you ignore them? I mean if you send your son to school with heart shaped candy, will he get in trouble or will they just confiscate it?

Cause some kids get no valentines in their bags and they go home and cry.

Or some dudes nowadays only want to put valentines in other dudes bags.

So it ruins it for everyone.

At that school.

My kid's did regular old Valentine's Day last year.

Only reason they aren't this year is because the little shits are off all th's week for Mardi Gras.

It's a shitty holiday for boys. When I was 7 or so I was one short of the mandated valentines for every girl, so my dad stopped at the pharmacy on the way to school and picked up a single card (which of course was a bigger, expensive card). So I caught shite all day for giving a huge card to the quiet girl who was at the end of the alphabet.
