It's not AAU itself, it is the coaches that are making a living off of being amateur basketball coaches. I gained so much more from AAU than I did my high school team

AAU is about dunks/ highlight reels; not developing any skill.

Which is why a lot of guys who are in it are either terrible from the line or the field

Because the AAU tournaments are basically showcase tournaments. There is no real coaching involved. The teams are basically all-star teams playing streetball.

Most, not all, AAU coaches only care about running and playing selfish basketball. Little to no fundamentals and many times inflate the ego of their players.

Many, not all, of the coaches instill in the players that fundamental basketball (running offenses, slowing the pace of the game down) is boring basketball.

I coached a student who had their AAU coach tell them that we needed to "run" to be successful. Needless to say a fast break style did not suit the talent on our team. Took a while for the student to understand that good basketball doesn't equal running.

Dad eventually made them break contact with the AAU coach because he started to realize that it was hindering them instead of helping them on the court.

Have heard many coaches tell the same story.

Most AAU coaches are only interested in winning crappy tournaments and have no concern for actually teaching fundamental basketball.

AAU exists bc high school basketball is a waste of time for future lottery picks...

You don't get better dominating kids who should be getting your autograph...

Btw the new term is "grassroots"

They have made it more about the showcase than the development. As such, players are being taught to develop a showcase game in lieu of a winning mentality.

There is also the issue with the coaches selling the players out to shoe companies for their own personal profit.

When I watch Ben Simmons play, I often tell myself that is a guy who played too much AAU.
