re: Shaq: If LSU would have paid Saban, LSU would be Alabama

You should know that I meant we should have done whatever it took to get him back when it became known he was leaving the NFL to return to college coaching. Its not that difficult to figure out
In one corner, you have Saban, an egotistical a-hole who was playing the field every season he was here, always looking to jump out. He left LSU in the lurch going to Miami when he did, lied to administration, the AD, his team in the process. He bombed in the NFL. Now he comes back like an abusive two-timing skanky ex when he's been humbled...
In the other corner you have Miles, who came in and guided the team through the Katrina disaster to remarkable results, who was coming off his second consecutive top 5 finish in as many seasons; a run Saban had not been able to achieve here.
Right now, hindsight tells you taking Saban would have been the better move, but that's not quite clear. If we gave him a soft landing with no consequences, he might not have changed, and might have jumped at the next big chance. If we did turn him down, he may have realized Alabama was a very lucky turn of events, that he could easily have ended up at Ball State or somewhere like that.
At the time for LSU, the obvious ethical choice was to keep Miles and tell Saban no. It sucks for us that he's turned Bama into a machine, but the choice remains the correct one.
Look at it this way- the Cleveland Browns drafted Johnny Manziel in the first round. He's acted like a complete jackass. He's almost certainly going to be let go, and he should be. If in 10 years, he has a couple of Super Bowl wins elsewhere, would you go back and say Cleveland should have kept him and let him do whatever he wants?

nevermind he did the same thing to Ok. St.

I'd like to see some documentation on that
You won't.

How many years did he call him every week?
Just the first year is all I knew of.

I do believe he had a problem with being in a room with people whose egos were as big as his is.
Well, trying to get through to a millionaire as opposed to a kid that wants to learn will be a challenge for anyone. My comment wasn't a knock on Saban or his ego.

I think this is getting blown out of proportion. I think I know what Shaq means (but he can't articulate). Its pretty obvious nothing was stopping Saban from leaving for the NFL. At that time, no money. Reality is, had Saban not left more than likely, better than 90% chance, LSU has those 4 national titles he got at Bama. Bama is not good because they are the state of Alabama. They are great because they got Saban. Saban is the one and only reason they became successful. His same philosphy would have worked with the #1 recruiting classes that would have remained here.

Some manage to do it very well.

Let's look at this another way, rather than bash Shaq for an ill-advised statement. Where is the unreserved commitment to excellence from LSU's leadership in terms of money? That hair's difference between LSU and Bama may have a lot to do with Bama's leadership being willing to do whatever it takes to sustain that excellence. Look at all the "unpaid" coaches on Bama's payroll in other capacities-- they damn near have a coach per player. Where's LSU's nutritional center-- the donations are already there-- build the damn thing already! Does Bama hijack the athletic department to the tune of $10 million to allow these initiatives to move forward? You can debate Miles v. Saban all day long, but the bottom line is Saban would not have been able to reach the pinnacle of success he has at Bama without a lot of infrastructure and support from the leadership to sustain it.

NO

It was a perfect storm, but there is MUCH more to it than Saban for Bama. Much more.

OMG. You are in love with Saban.
It is so cute too!

I thought this too but didn't say it.

Saban wanted to try the NFL.
There were articles back then that Bertman met with Saban and asked if matching the Dolphins' money offer would influence his decision. Saban said no. It was an itch that Saban wanted to scratch.
Now would offering double (as Shaq suggests) have made a difference? Nobody knows but that would have been out of the question in 2005, IMO.

Saban failed.
Was he really a failure though? I think he just figured out the NFL wasn't for him.
He was 9-7 and 6-10 in his 2 seasons with the Dolphins (1 game better than the current highest paid coach in the NFL the past 2 seasons - Sean Payton).

Let's be objective here- Saban is a great coach, and would have success anywhere he is at.
All things considered, Alabama is a better program than LSU. More wins, more head-to-head wins, more national titles (before Saban, with Saban). Nick Saban at Alabama will exceed Nick Saban at LSU. Is this a blasphemous thing to say? Objectively, no, it is what it is. We at LSU (Auburn, Georgia, Florida etc) WANT to be better, we STRIVE to be better, but if both programs are going at full tilt, Alabama is going to be the better program. It's the best program in the SEC and arguably the nation.
It's the same in other conferences. In the Pac 12, you can say Oregon and Stanford are the best, but everyone knows USC is the sleeping monster. If USC gets the right coach, they will reclaim that conference, regardless of what any other team does. Big 12- TCU and Baylor are on great runs, but Oklahoma is still the big dog. They won this year, and if they get it right, they will continue to win, no matter what Baylor does.

what could have been
Nope, Saban was using LSU as a stepping stone for the NFL. I don't feel bad about that as this is normal. He is lucky the Bama job opened up when he was a failure in Miami and the rest is history.
He wasn't staying at LSU long term.

He couldn't have done the same thing at LSU that he did at Alabama.

I'm still surprised he hasn't wanted one more shot in the NFL.
Saban doesn't want to get his arse handed to him every week of the season like his last stint in the NFL. His ego and pride couldn't handle it.
