I don't think this is true either, in addition to basketball diaries he had already garnered a ton of praise for his performance in Gilbert grape. He was already a heart-throb for the MTV generation females so it's not like he was a nobody coming into titanic. Titanic did make him a mega-star, but to say he wasn't on the radar is asinine.

I didn't imply he wasn't on the radar - or I didn't mean to.
But I remember people complaining initially. He was small and young and didn't seem like a leading man - and then he blew-up.
No one can deny that Titanic launched him from another young actor into A-list stardom.
