Aranda's 3-4 looks like it's mainly called that because of the look of the front. 3 down lineman in a base front and 2 down in a nickel. Really, he's about matchups and exploiting them. He takes what personnel he has to work with and makes a defense. He doesn't make guys fit his "system". He uses a lot of disguise to bring pressure. It looks like he wants to attack and dictate what the offense does instead of the other way around.
Finally we'll see that aggressive Tiger defense we've missed oh so much! Great hire!

Some of you guys more knowledgeable than me please explain to me why the 3-4 defense isn't just a 5-2 instead. It looks like a 5-2 on the diagrams.
It looks nothing like a 5-2
3-4 means 3 dline player with their hand in the dirt and 4 lbs standing behind them . It supposed to mask where the 4th rusher is coming from. It's works the best when you have beast OLB that can rush the passer and are athletic enough to drop in coverage on occasion.
See 2011 Bama def for a great example.

Our defense was pretty damn aggressive this year which is why you saw so many big plays.

Thanks - can't wait to see how our personnel are used in this system. Sounds like Aranda can take our athletes and put them in a spot that fits their skill set to make plays. Looks like a very flexible philosophy that should be fun to watch.

Aranda faced a similar personell problem at Wisc.
Here is an article explaining how he adjusted:

I agree with those that mentioned Teuhema. He looked really quick with limited snaps in 2014. That being said, I think you'll see some front 7 recruits give LSU another look (especially LBs) when Aranda and O come callin'.
