Aranda and the 3-4

I see a lot of posters say he runs a 3-4.
Do we have the personnel for that?
Is Godchaux big enough to play tackle or will he be a 3-4 DE?
Is LaCoture good enough to play nose?
Can someone else play nose?
I would assume Key and Bower are perfect 3-4 OLB, but where does Neal fit in?
If Beckwith leaves, he'll even if he stays, do we have 2 MLBs?

I'd imagine your front would be:
DE - Godchaux and Herron/Bain
DT/NY - Lacouture
OLB - Key and Bower
MLB - Beckwith and Riley
All that said, you're not gonna have hardly any LB depth

That's kind of what I thought. Looks like Neal, despite a pretty good year is the odd guy out.

Yeah. And, least his current size, Key is a near perfect 3-4 OLB.

We don't have the bodies for a 3-4 right now. The big guys up front are in this recruiting class but doubt they want to depend on true freshmen. I think Beckwith would really excel in a 3-4.

I would not doubt he runs something that's more to our strengths. He's not an idiot. If he feels LSU doesn't have the personnel for it he'll adjust. He ain't like Steele by all accounts where he tried to force the square peg in the round hole by forcing DBs to play heavy zone all year.

If beckwith stays we may be able to run but we don't have the lb depth to run a 3-4 and outside of Key none of our DEs are athletic enough to stand up.

I disagree here. I think Bower could do it.
I think we'd be fine at DE and OLB. Outside of Beckwith though, the middle (DT and MLB) would be a mess. I don't think we have a 3-4 DT on the roster. Do we?

Bower is not athletic enough to drop in coverage which is the point of the 3-4. You're trying to mask where that 4th rusher is coming from.

Neal is gonna start somewhere. For anyone thinking he is too light in the pants to play DE in Aranda's 3-4, two points:
1) Aranda's version of 3-4 is about having linemen attacking upfield, and Neal excels at that.
2) Don't forget that LSU actually moved him to DT in 2014. Strength is not gonna be an issue.
If Beckwith leaves, Neal is the best returning player we have in the front-7. No way he becomes a benchwarmer just because of a change in scheme. He has a unique, but valuable skillset that could apply to pretty much any defensive scheme.
Granted, we would probably want a bigger DE on the other side (Herron would be ideal, but possibly Godchaux as well). But I love the idea of Neal as a full-time DE in Aranda's defense. He would thrive. Not to mention, another year of learning under Orgeron.

Well then I'm glad I started the thread.
Perhaps instead of being a dick you can contribute something useful.

Oh, and Teuhema (if he is returning) is definitely athletic enough to man an OLB spot in Aranda's 3-4. I know Key blew by him as a player in 2015 - but Teuhema isn't lacking agility for someone his size.

Key will be our best front 7 player next year. His stats were almost identical to Neals' stats and he was true freshman. The only things separating them was Neal going crazy in the Florida game.

Ya think? I'm not as familiar with him. I didn't make a point to watch him this year.

I like the 3-4 Defense. With LSU speed we can move some of our speedy DEs to OLBs. Then we can put more beef on the Defensive Line.

Yeah, Teuhema had no impact in 2015. But he looked really quick off the edge in 2014 (in his limited snaps as a true freshman).
Why he disappeared from the radar in 2015, I don't know. Simply not as good as originally thought? In Orgeron's or Miles' doghouse? Attitude problems? Again, I don't know.
But he showed flashes of real talent in 2014.

Look further back on the board. There is a video link where Aranda discusses his scheme. Our personnel should fit well.

We will have players for 3-4 come signing day.
Ed Alexander will play Nose.
Divinity is an EE, not far from ideal weight and will have plenty of time to pack on some weight.

I agree that Alexander will definitely be a NG in Aranda's 3-4. But getting a lot of real playing time as a true freshman? In fact, do you think he is as "college ready" as Lawrence (if we get him)???
I think it will be Gilmore and Lacouture at NG in 2016.
