He didn't hit him with the crown of his helmet.

Yeah, that's a pretty bad call. Did they say helmet to helmet contact I guess?

Also, a player is not considered defenseless if he's moving forward. And the UCLA kid was.

It was obvious targeting. He is supposed to bend at the waist and go in lower, like this:

The offensive player lowered his helmet into the side of the defender. That's as bad as it gets.

According to a Big 10 official I know, it is.

According to the rule book, it is not.

I'm confused how anyone can look at that and say it's targeting

I didn't explain that correctly.

Targeting can be called at any time if the contact is initiated with the crown of the helmet, even if the ball carrier isn't defenseless. Where the "defenseless" interp I posted comes into play is when there is helmet-to-helmet contact that doesn't involve the crown of the helmet - like this play.

The UCLA player was not "defenseless" in this case, He was not blindsided and was advancing the ball and was not struck by the crown of the Nebby player's helmet.

I understand, I thought you were saying any player moving forward (towards the endzone) couldn't be considered defenseless.

Anyway, I agree it's an awful call. The rules even say it's less likely to be called targeting if it's a wrap up tackle.
