Did you even bother to read what Mann posted?
Posted on 12/16/15 at 2:28 pm to TJG210
Yes, I did read it.
I am questioning whether you did.
Please show me the part about athletics "stealing" from academics.

The funny thing about this whole thread is that it proves Mann is right.
What he ACTUALLY said (and reiterated in his blog "Something Like the Truth", is that those who complain about the academic side being impoverished while the athletic side prospers, are likely to be treated as treacherous outcasts. He acknowledges that the money comes from different places but that they reflect misplaced priorities.
He's right, of course.
But those who say it out loud will be attacked and considered disloyal to...(wait) ...LSU!

One has nothing to do with the other, if anything athletics gives back to the academic side. The statement was nothing but another academic showing their penis envy of the money athletics gets/brings in.
If he wants to bitch at someone, bitch at the state government who has way too damn many 4 year schools for a state the size we have. Let the politicians close down some of them, but we all know that won't happen because that would be shutting down their little fiefdoms of patronage. I don't want to turn this into a political topic, but JBE is already giving reassurances none will be shutdown.
Places like SUNO are just stealing the publics money for the product they turn out, why not use those resources to bolster the flagship university?

I sometimes wonder why more faculty members at LSU and elsewhere don’t speak up about how their schools have been defunded over the past eight years.
Defunded?
2003-2004 LSU Expenditures $491,076,737
2013-2014 LSU Expenditures $709,711,681
That's a 44.5% increase at a time when inflation only increased 26.6%.

These academics think math teachers should be making as much as Les Miles and probably should be ignored.

I see your point, but total expenditures doesn't list the source of funding. So "defunded" (from state funding) can still be accurate.

Some of these math teachers may be better at their job than Les Miles is at his.

Yeah frick that guy.

I don't know anything about Bob Mann, but is there anything to back this up:
Since when is being a university professor not a real job?
Oh that's right, people outside of academia are quick to discredit those working in a "publish or perish" career path because "all they have to do is teach two classes a semester." Nevermind that academia in one of the most highly competitive fields to get into, and with grant money drying up it is becoming even more difficult to be successful.
Again, I know nothing about Bob Mann's productivity, but this seems like a boastful rebuttal based on nothing but rhetoric.

I’ve got a suggestion: Teach more classes, Bob. Bring in some grant money, Bob. Make the investment in your salary and your “research” and writing pay off for the university and this state. Get a real job, Bob.

Or perhaps you can’t because nobody wants to hire you in the real world. That’s why you have to live in one made of ivory towers built on the tax dollars of the good people of this state. No Bob, you’re a bad investment and YOU and your ilk are the problem with LSU.

Why doesn’t he go somewhere else if he is so miserable? Perhaps because nobody will pay him $120,000-plus to teach two classes a semester and write his blog and Facebook posts all day. The LSU athletic department is run as a business, and a profitable one at that. The academic side of the university is not run like a business. It’s a bloated bureaucracy and is filled with these faculty types like Mann who believe they’re entitled to something the hard-working people in this state who pay his salary are not. LSU is a very poorly run investment for this state and that’s why our tax dollars are being wasted, paying for blowhards like this dude. Bob Mann is a whiner and a hypocrite of the highest order and his schtick makes him a first-class boor who is wasting MY tax dollars. People who disagree with him are called bigots or worse. He doesn’t allow any dissenting views on his website and blog, yet he relies on his free speech right to belittle LSU and its administrators
So true.

Do people actually read The Hayride?
It was spot the frick on with the F. King Alexander debacle and accurately put down what happened with Les Miles staying.
And F. King validated them with the statement he put out a few days later.
ETA: interesting how the only people ITT bashing the source are people who have a history of left leaning posting on the poliboard.

It is a fricking University. Athletics wouldn't exist without the educational institution. It's supposed to be an extracurricular activity, but athletics are the tail wagging the dog. And some on the academic side resent that? I'm shocked, shocked.

How?
Let's assume there were no athletics at LSU. Would the University be any better off financially?

If LSU wants to get more money for academics, Bob Mann's method is not the way to do it. You do NOT divide athletics and academics in fundraising. They need to work together, for the benefit of BOTH.
This is partly correct.

Athletics gives an opportunity to showcase a university on national TV several times a year, athletics reinvests MILLIONS of dollars to the university despite that recognition it allows, and athletics has ZERO negative impact on the funding of the academic side of the university. So the only people who "resent" that are morons right?
The academia crew only sees one thing and it pisses them off so they complain rather than find constructive solutions. They would rather bring down a successfully run aspect of the university that ONLY helps rather than attempt to elevate the academic side.
So in other words they are jealous and they allow this zero sum idea of funding to cloud their rational thought patterns. In other words they are using political tactics to damage part of the very institution for which they work because they don't like the reality of the situation. It is a political tactic used by both parties... "Who cares who we hurt as long as we get our way!" But the problem is they are only hurting themselves, just like the R or D who decides the other party is the enemy rather than they are both on the same team.
But life goes on

And I got news for you, too. Academic fundraising DWARFS athletics fundraising at LSU.
I don't know about the "DWARFS" part. Not that I'm saying I don't believe it. But what I do know is that the academics side does quite well with donations. I know that for a fact, having had a friend of the family that worked in that department on campus. This guy would always tell us that when Saban came aboard and got the football team right, donations poured in at a greater rate on the academic side. Because everybody felt good, school pride was at an all time high, etc.
