Thanks all for the replies. I had some assumptions that it might be related to taxes. I reached out to the landlord prior to meeting him this weekend and asked about the form of payment. I was able to go the route of using a check and will continue to do so going forward. His reasoning to me about going the route of cash or money order was so that he could see that I had the money rather than take the risk of receiving a bad check.
