I think it ties into the slowness of a Sunday. There's time to reflect on your life and choices, and if you were brought up religious you're conditioned to do it more intensively on Sunday. Introspection can be depressing, because no matter how good your life is there's always some way you can live better, make less mistakes and be more to the people that are important to you.
