Metal will dull your maul bro. I'll usually just use a chunk from the tree we're cutting and splitting, then split the last chunk when I'm wrapping up.

Wood that we was splitting then was green. Maul nor wedges never made it to the plate.

Dull the maul? LOL...more like roll the edge and then I'd be looking for the grinder.

The next year we built the ram/splitter that we mounted on the tractor using the hydros from it. Lots easier.
