THIS.
When I lived at home I know I averaged more chops with an axe or splitting maul on ground than once we had the metal plate on the ground. We got part of a fifth wheel plate to put on the ground to split on....it worked great as a "backstop".

I split about 20 logs the other day, and had to keep moving all around the yard or it'll make a big hole

I ended up doing it on a piece of 3/4 plywood
