Is there a big difference in picture between these two?

Generally yes, you get what you pay for. That being said, unless you are comparing them next to each other, you wouldn't notice a deficiency with the Vizio.
I have the Vizio M70 and love it

You have to compare like models. I'll take a Vizio M series over a Samsung 3 series any day. Samsung has better high end sets, but at a much higher cost.

I've had a Vizio for 6 years. Love it, great picture, have had zero problems. My Dad has a Samsung - better picture but twice the cost so all in all, the Vizio works really well for us.

Where Samsung and Sony will shine is with upscaling. There is still a dearth of even 1080p content (although that is a lot better over the past 3 or 4 years), with a lot of stuff coming through your cable wire (heck, most of it) being 720p. So, if you're buying a modern 4k set, the upscaling difference between Samsung (or Sony) and Vizio might be noticeable - even very noticeable.
However, in native resolution, Vizio provides - by far - the best picture for the money according to most objective reviews. So, it all depends on what you want and where your budget is. If size is consideration #1 - Vizio is likely to win across most of the models that big boxes will carry. I find Vizio pictures fairly bright and vibrant. All of the smart apps leave something to be desired - it is at this point where I will use something else (Roku or Amazon fire stick) and don't care about those distinctions, but Vizio's have been noticeably bad (albeit improving of late) in the first couple of generations of smart TVs. Their remotes get kudos for providing a full size keyboard, though.
I'm a Sony guy, generally, and Sony is probably better for movies, between comparable models, of course. Samsung and Vizio are probably better if sports and/or console gaming are higher priorities. It is more difficult to find sales on current Sony models and much easier to find good deals on Vizio.
