Volkswagen of America will offer $500 to owners of 2.0-liter diesel vehicles with illegal emissions test-rigging software, part of a “goodwill” package aimed at calming customers affected by the company’s deception.

The $500 will come on a prepaid Visa card and can be used wherever Visa is accepted, VW said in a statement. As part of the package, affected owners will also receive a second prepaid card worth $500 that can be redeemed at VW dealerships, and three years of 24-hour roadside assistance.

frick that.

If VW just tanked the resale value of my car by cheating emissions standards they can shove 500 dollars up their arse and I'd see them in court.

This is like the Carnival cruise that went to shite in the gulf and the compensation was a discount on a future carnival cruise.

As some posters and VW owners have mentioned this could hurt resale without the corrections made, will this $1000 cover those costs

ETA It appears not.

That ain't quite gonna make up for my car being effectively worthless.

ETA: I had to laugh when I got an apology letter from them and right under it was my note for that month.

Where this gets hairy in my mind is when it breaks out of warranty. I can't trade it in unless I take a massive loss on it. I'm just stuck with it. Who's gonna pay for that failure that I'm forced to live with because I can't sell it before it fails?

If they'd double my warranty, I'd be content with that. I was going to keep the car regardless.

Also, it says acceptance of the goodwill package does not release your claims against VW. So why the hell not? I signed up.

quote:

Affected customers eligible for the Goodwill Package are not required to waive their rights or release their claims against VWGoA in order to receive the Package.

In addition to this, they should reform all warranties to 6 years, 120k miles.

It was 500 alright, just not $500.

I'd tell VW to put a banana in their corporate jet's tailpipe(s) and fly away.

Here's $1000. You're welcome for better fuel mileage and reliability. Now bring your car in so we can reprogram it to get worse fuel mileage and break down within a year (requiring a complete engine rebuild).
