Ohio State was #1 going into the bowl game. USC finished 5th in the Pac 8.
Ricky Bell wasn't even the highest vote-getting RB in his conference. Chuck Muncie finished 2nd in Heisman voting and he had 500 fewer rushing yards than Bell.
Some years they give it to the MVP of the best team. That's how Gino Torretta beat Marshall Faulk.
The best statistical player doesn't always win. Troy Davis didn't beat Danny Wuerffel. Kevin Smith ran for 2500 yards and finished 8th. Darren McFadden ran for 700 fewer yards and finished 2nd the same year.
