Per new concussion lawsuit settlement, US Soccer players in under 11 programs will not be able to head balls.

New concussion lawsuit settlement will also limit headers in the US Soccer Under 12 & Under 13 programs to 15-20 headers per player per week

I was born at the wrong time. Wouldn't have had to spend my childhood jumping into people to pretend like I was going up for the ball

Twellman literally has been campaigning for this for years. I talked to him for 30 seconds once and he brought that up.

When I was that age, I remember one practice where we only worked on headers. Two hours of hitting the ball with our head. I had the worst headache. And I don't want to hear that shite about using the right part of your head. After about 20 minutes using the right spot, you are just trying to avoid pain. It's the only time in my life that I actually believed a coach was abusing me. Our parents were pissed, and this was before parents got pissed about practice being too hard. They never complained when I threw up from running too much, but they were flat-out pissed about this practice.

Pathetic
The balls they use today are like pillows

Try using the mid 80s Brine cannonballs we had, esp when wet

The one thing I hated about being a defender. I would just nudge the other guy out of the way so neither of us would head the ball.

The 80s? Hell, we had those in 2004.

Another notch in the Jurgen Technical Director belt. Revolutionizing US soccer right before our eyes.

As turrible as it is, maybe our youth system will benefit from being forced to rely more on build up and less on set pieces.

Nah.

In another case of "cool story bro," I am a member of the AMA (American Medical Association) and you get daily email updates on medical news. This was included this morning:

quote:

USSF recommends medical professionals make decisions on head injuries rather than coaches
The AP (11/10) reports that, in light of a lawsuit filed in August 2014, the US Soccer Federation (USSF) said Monday it is “recommending a ban on headers for players 10 and under, limits for players between 11 and 13 and having medical professionals rather than coaches make decisions on whether players suspected of concussions can remain in games.” The USSF is “strongly urging” all members to adopt the changes. Under the new rules, “a Health Care Professional (HCP) must be present at all development academy matches and will make all decisions regarding head injuries, taking decisions away from coaches.”

Interesting that some sort of health care professional has to be present at all development academy matches.
Seeing as I want to go into sports medicine...

That part makes complete sense. I would rather have a medical professional making medical decisions and a coach making coaching decisions.
