I think that's Speed Queen's secret. They've stuck with the basic mechanical design and left the fancy electronics to the others.

thats exactly right. but you dont need to spend $800 apiece to get something with the speed queen name when there are literally THOUSANDS of WD sets on craigslist that will outlive you.

That's exactly what speed queen does, internally it's a 1990's unit.
Washers and dryers peaked in 2004, fridges in the late 90's.
Never buy anything GE unless you want to replace the control board. The only control boards I keep on the truck are for GE, lg and Samsung can be hit or miss, but the parts are cheap if you can find someone who fixes them.
