hat buzz you're hearing, coursing through the ether and inexorably gaining in volume, is the sound of the global-warming debate heating up again.

Antarctica, our planet's southernmost continent, is gaining ice, a NASA study has concluded. The paper, published in the Journal of Glaciology, presents a new analysis of satellite data. NASA says the study found that Antarctica saw a net gain of some 112 billion tons of ice a year between 1992 and 2001, falling to an 82-billion-tons-of-ice-per-year increase from 2003 to 2008.

The increase "is currently adding enough ice to the continent to outweigh the increased losses from its thinning glaciers," NASA said in a press release. "The research challenges the conclusions of other studies, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) 2013 report, which says that Antarctica is overall losing land ice."

while I get very tired of the pissing match of political rhetoric that this has become, I can't say that it is not a bad idea for us to cut back on the use of fossil fuels where it makes sense....

I'm not sure what they think the right temperature is for an ever changing world in which we live,

And how much money they'll need to achieve that.

But here was a perfectly timed article released by the Washington Post linked via Google News that was verified by "some research groups" from a year and a half ago.

LINK

quote:

In 2014, several research groups suggested that the oceanfront glaciers in the Amundsen Sea region of West Antarctica may have reached a point of “unstoppable” retreat due to warm ocean waters melting them from below. There’s a great deal at stake — West Antarctica is estimated to contain enough ice to raise global sea levels by 3.3 meters, or well over 10 feet, were it all to melt. The urgency may now increase further in light of just published research suggesting that destabilization of the Amundsen sea’s glaciers would indeed undermine the entirety of West Antarctica, as has long been feared.

We are entering a new ice age in Earth's normal cycles.

The sun's output is like a beating heart and we are heading to the time period between beats.

Human activity has not too much, if any thing to do with "climate change".

this is why global warming is crap

science knows what it knows, and knows what it doesnt. You can have your own beliefs, but you cant have your own facts...from today:

The Melting Antarctic Ice Sheet Is Heading Towards Irreversible Collapse
LINK

quote:

Computer models suggest that the melting West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is melting at a rapidly accelerating rate. A new computer simulation shows that at current melting rates, the ice sheet will hit a critical point in about 60 years, and could result in a sea level rise of as much as 10 feet over the next several centuries.

If you look at history, ice ages happen about once every 100,000 years or so. History tends to repeat itself. By the time the next one happens I'll be dead and gone, so who cares.

But this doesn't fit the narrative...

It's annoying that our government acts like we are somehow the cause of global warming. How about countries like India and China with billions of people driving cars with horrible emissions and they don't give a single frick.
