Coaches and basic clock management

How in the blue hell do people who do this for a living F this up so bad so often? I mean almost simultaneously Duke and Minnesota have the ball down a score on the 1 yard line with 20+ seconds left in the game and neither seem to have any idea the clock is running and end up putting themselves in a position to run one play when they could have run 4.
It's astonishing. As bad as Minnesota's management was Duke's was even freaking worse because they didn't have a timeout. I've been seriously considering for a while sending in a resume to some coaches to be hired on as a "game manager" to help them make decisions in times like these. Obviously they would be too prideful to consider it but my God some of them could use it. I mean anyone who has every played Middle School football or even picked up a controller to play Madden knows better than these clowns.

I can see the head coach being a derp, but where are the assistants and coordinators on this stuff correcting the mismanagement?

Yea, the amount of bad time management in nfl/college/football in general is astonishing. I honestly tihnk coaches just get caught up in the moment and forget.

The second the clock started running and Minnesota saw that they weren't lined up right, they should have called timeout

The Minnesota deal was a system failure. That staff has been together for something like 20 years. Kill was the decision maker. Even when he was out, I guarantee he was calling shots & telling them what to do. At the most critical juncture of the game Minnesota's staff was LOST. You could even see the indecision on the last drive. It looked like they were playing for the FG & the TD.
The interim HC should have burned the last timeout after the review. Give the QB two plays & get control of the situation.

I find these threads involving regular Joe message board poster and 20/20 hindsight to let everyone know how easy college football clock management would be if he is on the field and in the middle of pandimonium while trying to manage everything that is needed in a matter of a few seconds, quite hilarious.
Bravo, OP.
I bet clock management has to be one of the easiest jobs in the country.

Cue the wisconsin applicants from last year.

I wonder the same thing. All the money, matrics, assistant coaches and assistant to assistant coaches, grad assistants, break downs of situationals on laminated cards telling you what to do in nearly every imaginable scenario out there... still happens way too much.
Shows Les doesn't have the market cornered on it, though he seems to keep happening to him at least once every year. Still don't make me feel better about us doing it habitually just because others do as well.

That Minnesota game getting 2 plays off from the 1 with 19 seconds and a timeout was really bad especially coming off a lengthy review.
