Grey screen on sideline...

What is up with the grey screen the players hold up on the sideline? It looks like a projection screen, but there is nothing on it. I did notice that the players/coaches in front of it are signaling to the players on the field. Is it just a way for the players to quickly identify who/where the signal callers are?

Probably a good assumption. I'd agree. I'd imagine it's hard to find the signal caller when the team is constantly moving up and down the field.

Opposing coaches in the box can't see signals and the backdrop helps see the signal.

It's like a modeling thing. It gets the light just right.
