I had a 2008 duramax for 4 years and experienced a similar problem. It turned out to be a cracked water in fuel sensor in the bottom of my fuel filter that was allowing air into the system and creating the hard starting. I also had some glow plug failures that would cause hard to start scenarios. Merchant automotive sold a solid billet plug that replaced the fuel sensor for much cheaper than a replacement sensor.

Yeah I'd go that route too...especially since I'm seeing the WIF doesn't work a lot of times.
