Everybody likes to give herbstreit shite for his premature report of Miles' departure in 07 but I find it hard to believe he would report with that much confidence if there weren't some serious conversations. Do you think Miles just used Michigan for leverage? They didn't offer him enough money? Never showed any interest in the job? Just curious on the rant's opinions

pretty much feel he was gone had Herbie not made that statement on gameday that morning.

after that, Miles was basically just out to prove him wrong.

If we don't make the SECCG that year he's gone and we have Saban back.

Miles is the one pulling the strings in Ann Arbor this year. He's coaching both teams as of today and that is how great he really is.

The coach of Michigan is just a figure head duh!

I think he was gone but Herbstreit saved him from leaving.

Herbie is well connected in Big 10 country and I think it was a done deal. However, the leak right before the SECCG killed the deal and with the SEC and potential NC on the line, Miles had no choice. I don't think he was much of a candidate this last time around.

I wonder if Herbie leaked the info purposely to help OSU and to sabotage the UM hire. He knew that would kill the deal.

I was told before Herbstreit said he was leaving that he wasn't leaving. He was pretty pissed at Herb for saying he was just as he said in the presser about having to tell his team the morning of the game that he wasn't going anywhere. It was not happening. I don't know why people relive this anyway. It's silly.

I think he was gone but backed out over the story leaking. Same thing with Saban to Texas. Coaches are control freaks, and like to do things on their own terms. Leaks piss them off.

Heres my understanding which is not fact.

Herbie's understanding from his source was Miles had been offered and had pretty much accepted. What he didnt know was Miles had accepted under the condition of no leaks before the championship. He was adamant that he owed his team 100% and that no distractions would be tolerated.

Since then it has been debated that Michigan never officially offered and Herbstreit was just embarrassingly wrong. Supposedly one of the big decision makers at Michigan(LLOYD Carr maybe?) was adamant about not hiring Miles. Seems there is bad blood between him and Miles dating back many years.

No, he wasn't ever going to go back to Michigan. Only a few places in the country allow you to recruit the majority of your players from within a 2 mile radius and LSU is one of them. He was as interested as he needed to be to get some love and pay raise in the past.

Plus I am sure he is connected enough at UM to know that Harbaugh was going to get the first shot.

I remember an interview Miles gave some time after the 2007 season in which he said that he wanted to speak to Michigan so badly but could not until after the season was completed including the NC game. He did not elaborate but it deducing the meaning of his comment I would think that even if he had wanted to be considered for the HC job his personal ethics would not permit him to discuss it until he finished the season in Baton Rouge. By then it was too late.
And yes I do believe Herbstreit is not above sabotaging LSU when he has a chance to help OSU. It was a Dan Rather moment for sure.

https://www.thepostgame.com/features/201110/book-excerpt-how-michigan-chose-rich-rodriguez-and-brady-hoke-instead-les-miles-and-
quote:

On Friday, December 7, and again on Monday, December 10, Bill Martin, Mary Sue Coleman and Les Miles talked on a conference call. Both conversations were simple and pleasant. During the second call, Coleman said she could not hire Miles without meeting him first, and asked Miles to meet her and Martin in Miami, where Miles had already scheduled a recruiting trip. Miles replied that he could not do any face-to-face meeting until after the national title game. Miles let them know both times, however, that, "If you want me, then after the bowl game, I will be your coach. I just can't do anything before that. [But] I would never say no to Michigan."

After Rich Rod was fired:
quote:

The one coach who everyone agrees did not receive an offer from Michigan, again, was Les Miles. He had been handled shabbily during the 2007 search, and it appears he wasn't treated much better in 2010, either. All overtures to him were strictly a show designed to appease his supporters. When Rodriguez asked Brandon in December of 2010 if he already had someone lined up, Brandon denied it but said he would hire Les Miles "over my dead body." The rest was theater.

IDK what is true or if he was going or not but what I do know is I won $100 off of him staying lol.

I was at SEMA in November 2007 and was listening to a big speaker at one of the seminars they had talking. Well I of course had my LSU hat on like always and about half way the seminar the speaker stopped talking and looked at me and ask me this "You do know UM is taking Les from you all at the end of the season right?", it took me a second to realize what he meant but I just started laughing and and we went back and forth for a minute or so. Well at the end of the seminar he walked up to me to talk some more we ended up exchanging business cards and making the $100 bet. About a week after UM hired their coach I received a check in the mail with a note saying "You win this time but we"ll take him soon". Haven't spoken to the guy since lol.
