Just when you thought the Volkswagen emissions scandal couldn't get any worse, it might do just that. The automaker revealed to US regulators last week that its 2016 diesel models may have a different device that could help those vehicles earn higher marks on the government's emissions tests. The tech in question is "auxiliary emissions control device" separate from the software on automobiles made between 2009-2015 that was first disclosed last month. This new software heats the pollution control catalyst quicker, boosting the performance of the components responsible for separating harmful nitrogen dioxide into nitrogen and oxygen.

It sounds like this is a device that legitimately reduces the emissions from the vehicle by raising the catalyst temperature...why would you not want something that boosts the efficiency of the catalysts reducing NOx emissions? As long as it doesn't just do it when being tested, then it sounds like a legit emission reduction practice.

While our feckless politicians worry about a bit of a kerfluffle over some superior German engineering, China and India are pouring pollutants into the skies and oceans of the world.

Your Prius means diddly.

It's a great time to go to them. Their service dept went above and beyond for me this past week.

Went in for routine maintenance and they did much more with no charge plus loan me a 2015 Passat

What kind of stupid shite is this? Gasoline vehicles use light-off catalytic converters placed close to the exhaust manifold for exactly the same reason, get to operating temperature faster.

The government shouldn't be telling the car manufacturers anything about building cars. It's amazing that so few equate the overbearing regulation of the auto industry with the outrageous cost of vehicles.

VW is just the New England Patriots of the automotive world. Don't hate them 'cause you ain't them.
