Do you have enough guys/girls on your team to rotate them through? Let everyone play. I did this with my 4th grade team, I would sub out every 3 minutes no matter the score.
I think if they all play then they may want to play harder for you (blocking) as you can reward them all with stickers etc on hats and then reward all for just coming to play, especially at that age if just 8 years old.
Your goal is not to win at that age but introduce the game and teach basics so they can move on.

You are absolutely right and that is what I'm trying to do. I want them to enjoy it and learn to play the right way. Not run a freaking center sneak.
