As a general rule, if a team moves it would be nice if a condition of the move was that the original location retains the name and history.

The NFL team in Houston should be the Oilers, the NBA team in New Orleans should be the Jazz, etc.

I am not a particular fan of the team, but I thought it was really cool when Charlotte got the Hornets name back. I also think the Browns name is dumb, but I think it is the right call that Cleveland has that name. If Montreal ever gets another MLB team I hope they can be the Expos if they want (and I am a Nats fan).

There are two reasons Cleveland got the Browns back:

1) Modell was in violation of a lease agreement and had to go along with that deal to avoid a long court battle

2) Baltimore fans were sympathetic to Cleveland because of the Colts, so they supported the deal. That allowed Baltimore to get a team without screwing another city the way they got screwed.

Interestingly, in the 1990s the Irsays wanted a new stadium in Indianapolis and were having some trouble. They started talking to Cleveland. If they had moved there, they would have become the Browns and the Ravens would have taken the Colts name, logo, and history.
