In an effort to make jail actually fearsome in the minds of potential criminals, possibly scaring them into not committing severe crimes (murder, rape, etc), why not just make all big bad prions/institutions into places that only "keep em in" the walls and provide food/bed, but offer no security and no punishment for those who kill in jail. Once youre in....every man for himself.

Prison colonies. Let them fend for themselves and tax payers just pay for the fence.

That sounds like things could get out of control quickly and would be extremely unsafe for the guards.

do you think criminals actually weigh the consequences of their actions??

You can get 10 years in jail for robbing a convenience stores with a gun for a couple hundred bucks in cash.

Pretty horrible idea. Just breed violent sociopaths you can never release. Bit too extreme when over half the prison population is in for non violent drug convictions. Might as well execute every law breaker with this logic..

Not to hijack.. but since Alcatraz, why haven't they tried the remote island prison idea again?

These threads remind me that our founders were geniuses in creating our Constitution. It's dysfunctional, but it keeps our baser instincts at least somewhat in check. Our human nature is clearly no better than that of people in the worst third world shithole, and we would quickly devolve into one if left to our own devices.

Louisiana State Pen was like that in the 70s. They could tell what kinda night they had the next morning by how much blood was on the floors.

When you say "criminals", you really mean "black people", don't you?

Wasn't Mad Max Thunderdome based on this idea? Two men enter one man leaves?

The video game, Arkham City, was based on this premise. It didn't work out too well for society and the inmates mutually.

People will start killing other people within hours. So you have one guy in there for failure to pay child support, and someone starts a rumor that he is a child molester. Boom, dead within the hour

Seems extremely logical

FWIW, none of the criminals would be scared because they'd get to hang out with their buddies 24/7

As long as it's for violent criminals only ( which I assume you have to be to be in a maximum security prison), I'm down. That's how they do it in Peru.

I think you have a misunderstanding of the purpose of prisons.

Yeah, I often think that max security prisons are way too safe for the inmates. I mean why do I have to pay for their lavish, relaxed lifestyles? It's total bullshite.

The US prison system is already cruel and inhumane.
