Independent shops will be able to effect repairs like timing belt replacement. Reprogramming the parameters of the CPU will be the issue to avoid.

They'll be a class action suit brought (and won) and paid out with regard to this issue.
VW might opt to do wholesale buy-backs, but they'll still be those who opt-out and take their chances on the results of the suit(s).

Is this the same TDI powerplant that M-B uses and how does that affect them?

Is there history of an auto company doing this? Because I find that hard to believe.
