I grew up with two Bassett hounds. One day when I was in gym class we were running the mile and we each have partners to count our laps. I was keeping track of my friends laps when he came around and told me that my dogs were at the far end of the field. They had gotten out of our fence that morning and made it to school just in time to watch me run the mile. School was over two miles away.

I can actually best that ;)

In 1987, my Basset got out from our house on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. She had gotten out while we were at school and parents at work. After searching for an hour. My Dad piled us in the boat to look for her. He spotted her on the shore of the lake which was rougly six miles away from our home. She walked along the shoreline that distance over seven hours or so. Absolutely unreal how much ground she could cover in that time. For a Basset at least.
