First off, I'm not here to bash the play calling like so many others.

We won, in a hostile arse environment, with a young QB that had a tough outing in his first and only start, and did everything we could to protect him from making a mistake that could ruin his confidence going forward. Plus, I am as positiger as they come.

That said, I think a valid critique of our approach last night was the overuse of the zone read in the final 20 minutes.

If you want to keep the ball on the ground and run clock, fine. I get it. But why not just line up and let LF and DW bang away like they had been all game?

Harris had a couple of nice runs on those calls, but honestly, I think the majority of the time he made the wrong read and our RBs were getting swarmed as soon as Harris released. We lost yards several times, and those were on very valuable possessions at the end of the game when the D was beginning to wear down and it felt like the game might be slipping away as MSU and Dak were gaining steam.

Honeslty, as good of a runner as Harris is, and he looks very natural on bootlegs and designed roll outs, his zone read just doesn't seem very natural.

That said, huge win. Really excited about this team. Lots of energy on both sides of the ball, and as frustrating as the last 20 minutes felt on offense, I actually think the TD drive in the 3rd quarter was Harris' best of the night. Think that bodes well going forward.

Anyone else have similar thoughts on the use of the zone read?

Yeah, we didn't run the zone read well at all.

It looked like called runs rather than reads.

One thing I wanna say, is you really do have to give some credit to MSST defensive front. We know we have some maulers on the o-line, but their dline was able to get some penetration and disrupt plays pretty frequently. C Jones is ridiculous.

I wonder why they only used the jet sweep once, iirc. That play seems to have a pretty high success rate...even if it's not handed off to the man in motion.

I'd like to know what the results were. It seemed like they broke some nice runs on zone reads, and I remember a few getting stuffed. So, similar to our other running plays. Twenty three percent passing and penalties on the young linemen were the main problems.

We don't run read plays. All of the plays that appear to be read options are designed handoffs. It's irritating given that BH is such a talented guy who can snap off 15 yds easily if he is given the opportunity to make a read.

Auburn could not stop rb zone read yesterday. I hope we increase its use personally.

If I I remember right, we had problems on interior of O-line. Boutte got beat a few times badly, & I recall Teuhema coming in to replace him for some of the game, which I didn't mind seeing a true freshman competent enough to hold up vs an SEC defense.

I understand zone read is QB reading the DE, but hard to do much when the DT is in your lap
