able to spend past limit on credit card. what's going on?

I have had a $750 limit on my platinum capital one credit card for years. I always make my payments on time, and usually pay it off in full every 3-4 months.
just recently i used my credit card when I meant to use my debit card, but surprisingly, the transaction went through. I called capital one and they said my limit was still 750, which I have never been able to exceed in the past. I made a few more purchases on the credit card, just to experiment, and now I am over $100 of what capital one tells me is my limit, yet I am still able to make purchases.
every time I call capital one, they tell me my limit is still 750. None of the transactions on my card are pending, I'm over the supposed limit, yet can still make purchases on the card.
does anyone know what's going on?

I can't speak for Capital One, but when I had a low limit card Discover seemed to let me go over the credit limit with certain conditions that phased out the higher you went.
I never made a habit of it enough to really iron out the precise rules.
Maybe you still have the same limit, and Capital One changed their policies.

I hope they don't hit you with "overlimit" fees.

If you need to, you could always request a limit increase
Not sure how often you reach your limit but that is pretty low and if you've been a good member, they shouldn't have a problem raising it

Anyway, you will be hit with an overlimit fee. I worked at capital one, and I believe that is applied at end of your billing period. Pay it down pronto, or call to get a credit limit increase.

Why would you experiment with something like this?

That $3 coke just cost you $25 dollars.

If you're still in good standing, request a credit limit increase. By taking your account over or close to the limit, you're likely hurting your credit score

Get ready bro. The will either raise your rate or slap a few on you for going over the limit.
I remember once having one raise my limit from 7.5 to 27% for either being late once or going over the limit!

I had a couple of capital one cards a decade ago that I went over the limit on. Every month it was over the limit, they hit me with over the limit fees.
