Give me some "can't miss" items I need to make sure I see while I'm there.

The entire thing, I'm not kidding.

The entire place. No really just plan to go back and take each visit in sections.

The only problem is, its hard to get it all in a day.

Don't rush through it. It's worth every minute you spend in there.

It's almost to the point you can't see it all on 1 day, unless you're really hustling (and, in which case, you miss stuff).
So, take your time in the main building and recognize there is a whole building of planes, plus other building size attractions.
It is the best museum in America, possibly excepting the major ones under Smithsonian in D.C.

You know the phrase "turn the desert into green glass"?
They have some of the green glass. It's the real deal. It's right at the end of the Pacific Pavillion and it's not really presented with much fanfare. It's just another small artifact displayed just like the thousands of other small artifacts that you'll have seen by that point.
EDIT:
Be sure to see the "Beyond all Boundaries" movie, too. Another thing that always strikes me when I go are the uniforms they have on display. They're tiny.
Oh yeah, there are also a (dwindling) number of WWII vets that volunteer and work with the museum as general ambassadors. Spend a few minutes talking to them.

I'm dying to go but I don't think my little kid will tolerate it for long enough.

It's all great, make sure you get a ticket for Beyond all Boundaries. The only thing I was disappointed in was Final Mission; I don't think it's worthy of an extra charge.
If you are from here, spend plenty of time in the Louisiana pavilion where there are many local stories and memorabilia. The new section with march to Berlin is really done well and I look forward to the new Pacific theater exhibits in the same building when they open late in the year.

Happy Hour at the American Sector restaurant is 4-7 and they have half off draft beer, craft cocktails and some of the apps. The weather will be nice and the outdoor patio is in the shade in the late afternoon. It's a cool place.

Watch out for Bill Clinton Saturday. Bush tomorrow and Obama today.
Around town, causing traffic delays.

A friend of mine's father narrated some stuff at the WWII museum. He is the most decorated officer of the 82nd Airborne. He wrote a book that did very well, he's been portrayed in movies, etc. The guy is 98 years old and has a tremendously commanding presence. Got to meet him a couple times this summer. You know you're in the presence of greatness when you hear this guy speak. I haven't been to the museum yet, but hope to make it there soon.

The museum is a treasure. One of the true gems of the city. It will make you want to go home and fire up Wikipedia.
