How long do I need to keep it on there? I tried it and some wd 40 as well. I was scared the carb cleaner would eat through any coating it had on it so I sprayed and wiped immediately and of course nothing happened.

carb cleaner made it soften and curl up pretty quickly on mine...the only coating on your wheels is that shite that looks bad, so you want it to come off. most carbureators are made of aluminum, so it won't hurt those kinds of metals.
I would not try any other kind of paint stripper on them, as that would probably discolor the underlying metal.
