It wouldn't happen at my house at that age, but you're right in that it will happen. This is why you need to establish a clear understanding that they can call you for a ride no matter the time and you will pick them up no questions asked (assuming there's nothing really terrible going on). Don't let that just be something you say either. Make sure they understand that it is their number one option if they and/or their ride are drunk.

But that means I would have to stay sober on the weekends.

My parents allowed me to drink at home with them as a teen, and I will likely do the same for my kids. I will not, however, give alcohol to anyone else's kids.

My fathers side of family tree is filled with a long line of alcoholics. Violent, angry alcoholics at that. My grandfather used to beat the hell out of my dad and his mom.

Dad was the first one in many generations to beat the alcohol bug and overcome it.

Growing up my father frequently told me if he ever smelled alcohol on me he was beating my arse and rent was due on the first of the next month.

I didn't drink a drop till the day I moved out of his house. Even then I hated the stuff.

From what I recall in rehab the definition of an alcoholic is not in the amount, it's what happens when a person drinks. Can he not stop once he starts? Can he not drink if he doesn't want to? Does he neglect family, friends, or become violent towards them? Are there other problems? Dui, health, etc? If all these answers are no, then he is a hard drinker, and not an alcoholic. Those are my memories from AA and Palmetto Addiction Center in Rayville,LA circa 2007 fwiw. I wish your friend the best.

Maybe its time to stop the cycle. Holy shite. As an alcoholic you are going to buy your kids alcohol?

I dont see a big deal. My parents let my friends and I drink at our house before we went out. Didnt really need to ask them to necessarily buy it for us because we all had fake ids.

They knew we were going to be drinking. May as well be at a house instead of the levee or somewhere else before we went to the bars

This. It was never really a big deal. When I went out when I was 15, they'd ask what we were all doing that night and i'd tell them we'd be hitting up T.J.'s, Bruno's, Tucks etc. They said to be careful and to never be afraid to call them if I needed them, even at 3 am.
They never bought alcohol for my friends and I, but they knew we were drinking.

Other parents did host parties with alcohol and it was cool. There just didn't seem to be the overprotectiveness in Nola during the late 90's that you see now.

I went to a private catholic school with a bunch of rich white kids. Not once did I ever attend a party where parents provided booze. There may have been parents that were upstairs and knew what was going on and went to dinner and figured a party would happen, but getting booze from parents was never something I would have even considered.

Just make sure to pick them up and drive them from point A to point B so drinking and driving is out of the question. Never host a party, way too much liability and you could loose your arse in a civil suit if something bad goes down.
