I know what you mean. I've worked or hunted in the woods for most of my life and been close to many snakes. I've been struck 3 times; one cottonmouth, 2 copperheads. Didn't get bit, thanks to boots or leggings but pretty unnerving.
I used to kill rattlesnakes but realized they are pretty laid back. I have been close enough on at least 4 occasions to have them strike and they acted like, " wassup, dude?" If they even acknowledged me. Not so the other 2 species. So, about 20 years ago I gave those rattlers a pass. Don't regret it either.
