I think Gretzky is the GOAT, but I wouldn't say it's undeniable because one could make an argument for Mario Lemieux. At his peak he had a higher PPG than Gretzky, but unfortunately health issues took some years off his prime. Gretzky was able to stay healthy which is definitely a point in his favor, but skill wise Lemieux was right there with him

I'd throw Bobby Orr in the discussion as well. Changed the way hockey was played by defencemen. Won the Art Ross which is nuts. 8 Norris trophies in the 9 full years he played

Untrue. Mario's best PPG season 2.67 and his second best was 2.62. third was 2.30. These were not consecutive season. In fact, he had a PPG above 2.0 six times with the longest consecutive stretch being three years.

Gretzky, in his 9 years in Edmonton, averaged 2.40 PPG. He had a PPG above 2.0 ten times, and he did it in nine consecutive seasons. His best PPG season was 2.77, 2nd best was 2.69, and 3rd was 2.65. In fact, he had five season with a PPG above 2.40, one short of the number of 2.0 PPG season Mario had.

Gretzky had a better and longer peak, he also had a better and longer career. Gretzky was clearly the better player.
