Ever rented a catamaran?

6 or so buddies of mine have been throwing around the idea of renting a catamaran in the Caribbean next spring.
When the idea got tossed out, I immediately thought we would never be able to afford it, but I was wrong. The packages are all inclusive and come with a full staff, all meals, alcohol, etc. Obviously you still pay for shite if you go to shore or want other activities.
I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with that here and had any recommendations. Is there a better area to do this in than in the Caribbean? Should I use a specific company, or just VRBO? which is where we have done all of our beach house rentals at. And any other sidebar advice?

get a copy of "cruising world" magazine and go through the ratings and reviews for different charter companies.
They had some really nice cats for charter and the caribean is the most popular charter destination so prices are better.

Are you sailing or power? Experience level? Hiring a captain?

It's on my to do list but haven't had the opportunity because of my kid's age, gonna wait until the youngest is 6 or 7

Yes, several times.

What island?
I am just going to warn you that if you don't rent out the whole boat you will get thrown a boat with other groups of ppl. That may or may not be buzz kill. So to get the most out of it be sure you have a group that is large enough to rent a whole boat.

We are renting one with a skipper and cook for 10 days in the BVI next July. As you stated, it's more affordable than I thought it would be but if you get a boat with a full crew it gets $$$$$ in a hurry.
I'd recommend somewhere like the BVI as there are many islands you can visit in a short amount of time.

I would definitely do it in the BVIs. The Moorings is a very good company to use. If you don't have sailing experience, def get a Captain / Skipper. That would be about as much as a crew as I would get. Provision and cook yourselves, it's part of the fun. Plus, there are really good restaurants at various stops that you'll want to try. Even at 42' the boat can seem small, so hire only necessary crew.
With that said, if you are looking for crew, I'm a Skipper and would go for free ... Nevermind, I drink too much on those trips.
It will be a trip of a lifetime - don't pass it up !!

You know how to sail, or will you have a captain?

Do it.
We rented one in Italy for 2 nights, highlight of the trip.

Appreciate all the input. I'll be hiring a skipper/captain, had planned on a full crew, but now that I've looking into it a little more I'll pass on that.
One of the guys going has been several times and talked about snorkeling under the boat to get fish to cook for dinner. He says it's illegal, but "everyone does it" Dont know how I feel about this. haha. I have no problem delving into frowned upon activities, but not when I don't know how the local law enforcement is, and this particular friend has a problem with exaggeration, so should I believe him, or just stay away from something like that?

we had a captain and a deckhand...the deckhand was his wife and she happened to be a professionally trained cook. We'd just give them a little grocery money and while we were ashore they'd go get some things to cook. We were in Italy for almost two weeks and her cooking was probably the best we'd had in all of Italy. Not sure if that scenario is common for charters, but I'm sure majority of them can cook well enough...I'd probably shy away from poaching fish if it is in fact illegal.

Agreed. It's not a good idea to break laws in a foreign country.
