oes the high end surface pro 3 have the ability to fully replace a good laptop?

Yes - I have the i7 loaded with RAM. I run photoshop, video editing software, IBM RAD (java development IDE), and a few other pretty resource intensive software packages. I'm very happy with mine - I haven't used my desktop or laptop in months. I bought the docking station which allows me to keep my travel bag packed with power cord, mouse, etc. It makes it super easy to grab and go.

Do you think the surface pro 4 is worth waiting for with no set release date?
Depends on how much you need a new device. I did read a report that the keyboard for the SP3 will be compatible with the SP4. Also, the SP4 might come in 12" and 14" screen sizes-- so if you need bigger, you might want to wait. I guess it all depends on how much you need the "latest and greatest"... if you "need" the latest model - you probably should wait. If you're happy with something that serves a purpose well, even if it isn't the latest and greatest... go for the SP3.

These cost the same as a laptop. what's the advantage?

This article speculates the 4 will come out this time next year.
