I have a son in grad school ... when he comes home he will often ask if we have plans or what's going on and then make his plans. I certainly don't tell him where he can/can't go BUT I do still ask him to be respectful and let me know if he's coming home that night or staying at a friends.

He came home for a summer to do an internship, much like the OP. Guess he was about 21? He came and went but did let us know his general plans ... I'd never have told him he couldn't do something unless it was a super important family something but other than that, wouldn't have thought of it.

That's basically how it is here. My 19 year old daughter (no pics) still asks "Is it ok if I hang out with so and so? Can I spend the night at so and so's?"

To me that's different than towing their vehicle because they didn't ask permission to play golf.
