Would this only help with speed or something else? How much of a speed difference does it make?

It would help with speed. The modem she currently has is probably 7+ years old and uses old technology (DOCSIS 2.0).

She's best off replacing the modem and router together. As has been said, the Asus N66U is the standard recommendation here.

ETA: It could help with stability connecting from her house to Cox, but I don't know if that's a current issue.

why are people here recommending N band when AC has been out for a while? the price difference between the N66u and AC66u is much different.
