My dad talked about doing this at LSU as well (back in the late 60's). He has stories of eating dinner almost every night at the McDonalds outside campus for 60 cents each (he & my mom).

Huh? I am *not* a bum. I'm a jerk. I once had wealth, power, and the love of a beautiful woman. Now I only have two things: my friends, and... uh... my thermos. Huh? My story? Okay. It was never easy for me. I was born a poor black child. I remember the days, sittin' on the porch with my family, singin' and dancin' down in Mississippi...
THE NEW PHONE BOOKS ARE HERE!

Here here.
Kirby Smith followed by a long run of shite-hole apartments. A little more money would have made life a lot less stressful, but I don't know if it would have made it any better. Raj at Tigerland Market felt so bad he'd usually sell us flats of Natty and packs smokes on credit.

You at SMU? That makes sense.

Definitely right after i got married. i had just graduated college and was working a dead end bank job making about 33k a year. My wife was making about 30k. we both got paid on the 15th and the last day of each month. We would pay bills, get gas, and buy food and would have about $20 left over every 2 weeks and we just prayed we never blew a tire or had any car issues. We lived in an apt so luckily we didnt have home maintenance. Now, she makes about 60k and i make between 150-170k so we live pretty good now, but I'm kinda glad we went through a "poor" phase. Definitely brought us closer together and we appreciate what we have now.
how the frick could you barely live on 65k/year combined without children? living above your means?
2 car payments: $5k/yr
car maintenance or repairs: 2k/year
Food/eating out: 8k/year
Insurance, 401k, etc: 10k/year
Utilities/Internet/phone/etc: 5k/year
House payment: 12k/year
.... 42k total for those. And you could barely live with 23k/year more than that? more than lots of people make per year

I downvoted for this reason
Unless he lived in NYC or DC, then I rescind my downvote, because that is basically the poverty line in those cities. In Mississippi, that's a nice combined income

Lived in a single wide in one of the poorest parts of SC for the first part of my childhood. I was young though so I didn't really know what I was missing.

real talk. one fall we had a giant leak in the plumbing that required excavation and a $1100 transmission break within two days of each other. cleared out our young married savings accounts. we literally had $10 in savings and an empty checking account. we made it a week and a half till our next check on that.

Its amazing how much fun I could have going into a weekend worth $50. Buy a handle of cheap whiskey and 4 HotNReady pizzas. Lived like a king.

Before joining the Army I had a bank balance of -$250. That was about the worst for me. Not a great feeling.
Done the blood plasma many times. One time they jacked up my arm on the rehydration part, had a big softball sized lump in my forearm.

I knew kids in college who would get out a 20 to go to the bar and were budgeting based on the overdraft fees.
the fee-less $5 that Chase gave me in overdraft was always part of the budget

The 6 months after I dropped out of college and my parents cut me off for being a PoS. I was working 40 min away for $6.25 an hour. Had to cover car insurance for a 19 year old, rent and bills, gas, food and cell phone bill. I cut off my cable and only kept internet (1MB/s blazing speed), cut the phone line and kept cell phone, did not run the A/C or heat unless I couldn't stand it anymore, took 2 min showers to save water (set a timer). Did not go anywhere or do anything unless it was a gig with my band because that brought in some cash.
So many pbj, tuna and boiled eggs .... So many pirated video games played ....
Parents called me a piece of shite and they were right. Joke's on them because now 11 years later I make a good bit more than the two of them combined, have no degree and I work in an office 9-5 job that supports my family of 4 quite comfortably on a single income.

Mom and dad got divorced when I was 3. My dad used to dumpster dive at a fabric store to make us backpacks and such. He eventually moved out of state, which left me and my brother with my mom.
My mom worked at a plant nursery and would bring home the overripe tomatoes and bell peppers, which we ate for months. Thankfully my neighbor had tons of banana plants, so that was a treat. I'll never forget those times, they were a great life lesson.
Now... mom is a retired school teacher, dad is a retired doctor and I've made a very decent life for myself.

Now Just got divorced, child support on 3 kids, mortgage, utilities, gas, food. Yeah it's a struggle but it's also less stress and my health has drastically improved.
Me too. I have 2 kids, but my ex doesn't pay for crap. I pay her child support and all of the daycare. I also took a $30k paycut after I got laid off a couple years ago. Basically, life has took a steaming/stinky piss on my bank account in the past few years.
